Teen Truth Live: Anti-Bullying and Body Image

Commissioner of Education, Dr. Rita A. Sablan addresses students before the presentation begins. Dr. Sablan stressed the importance of a safe and orderly school and for everyone to work together to eradicate bullying on our campuses.

JC Pohl shares an inspirational story about how a school can band together to uplift one another. JC spoke to students about bullying and violence, sharing the Columbine shooting and his own life experiences.

Stephanie Armstrong talks about body image and what it means to love and accept yourself for who you are. Stephanie has reached over 20,000 students with her message of truth.

Students raise their hands to acknowledge that they have been bullied and have contributed to bullying. Everyone left the building with a renewed sense of power to make a difference in their lives and at school. Thank you TEEN TRUTH LIVE.

Juvenile Justice Field Trip

Corrections Secretary Ray Mafnas addresses the first ever student group to the facility and explains the process, precautions and way of life within the prison walls.

Mr. Walter Mendez's L.I.F.E. classes visited the CNMI Correctional Facility to tour the prison, speak with the director and learn about how the juvenile justice system works. They were able to hear from firsthand account, what life in prison is like and how precious freedom is.

Mia Sablan, Student Council President shares important information about 2nd Quarter report card conferences and Anti-Bullying student presentations at the January PTA Mtg. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month, at 6:00 pm, in the school cafeteria. The agenda often includes important announcements from officers, school staff and students. Students lead parent awareness presentations of school ESLRs and Megaskills. After announcements, parents break up into discussion groups to plan and address school reform matters. We hope to see you at the February 24th PTA Meeting!

Cultural Exchange with Seoul Dongbu District Office of Education

Thank you to the Korean Government Public Schools English Excellence Program for visiting GES. The two day event included English classes and cultural exchange with GES teachers and students. 155 Korean students from 6 public schools, along with 12 teachers, 3 Middle School principals, 1 district office supervisor and the district superintendent participated in the program. We hope to have more opportunities to share our unique cultures and to learn from one another.

The Spirit of Giving and Gratitude

Lt. Colonel Edward Camacho and daughter receive care packages for deployed and off island troops. The care packages were prepared by classrooms. The theme was the 5 Senses, creatively designed to give our soldiers a taste, feel, sound, sight and scent of home. GES care packages were mailed out care of, and in honor of Mrs. Lynn Camacho, Speech and Language Provider who previously worked at Garapan School and was a strong and beautiful Army wife.

Our former PTA Treasurer and active parent, Mrs. Jolene Torres poses with students proudly displaying the canned goods collected by the PTA for Thanksgiving. The canned and non-perishable goods were donated by parents and given to Karidat and the Women's Shelter. Thank you parents, for continuing to encourage a spirit of giving in our school community.

Mallards take off on foot to American Memorial Park for the 1st ever Mallard Trot. K-3rd graders participated in the activity on campus, while 4th-6th graders ran/walked on the pathway. The Mallard Trot was one of the November Committee activities to highlight the ESLR "Maintains a Healthy Lifestyle". Thank you to Mr. Jordan Jucutan for organizing this event!

The 2nd Grade Team and volunteers (Mrs. Diaz and Senorita Tenorio) decorate the GES Tree at the Pase de Marianas. The theme was a brightly colored, delicious looking Candy Land Tree. The ornaments were created by students and teachers/staff. Thank you Team 2nd Grade for always giving of your time to make our community a prettier place to be! Thank you to PDM Promoters for keeping the spirit of the holidays alive for our students.

The new GES school shirts are now available from the PTA. The new design was created by Mr. Vin Sablan of Kulan Zamu. You can pick up an order form at the GES Office on behalf of the Parent Teacher Association.

I cannot believe that the summer has flown by so quickly! We're busily preparing for School Year 2010-2011 and we've still got painting, cleaning and much preparation to do before we can open our campus gates. Teachers report to school on September 1, 2010 and our official first day of school will be September 7, 2010. We hope that you will join us before then so that we can introduce our school family and give you important documents that need to be filled out for your child's teacher. It will be a great time to meet one another and ask those questions we don't have time to get to on the first day of school, so please mark your calendars and bring your kids to the 2010 GES Welcome Back Fair!

Standards and Benchmarks Training

GES recently attended Standards Based Report Card training on Rota. A team of 13 teachers and staff worked on implementation, development of pre and post tests as well as data collection procedures. We will be piloting standards based reporting this school year across all grade levels in the areas of Language Arts, Reading, Writing and Chamorro & Carolinian Language Heritage Studies.

The facilitators consisted of staff and teachers at Sinapalo Elementary School. Sinapalo Elementary School began standards based reporting in 2005. Shown here are Lynn Michael and Daisy Atalig discussing the calibration of traditional grades to rubrics.

Summer vacation is upon us, and for GES that means we're getting geared up for renovations, repair and preparations for the new school year. The office will be open Monday - Friday, between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm. Saturday Library is on-going, from 8:00 am - 12:00 am. Mrs. Pangelinan and Mrs. Sablan will be off island until July 5, 2010. All inquiries should be directed to Ms. Laura Matsunaga @ 237-3341.

ScreamFree Parent Training is scheduled for July 23-24, 2010. More details will be forthcoming. There will also be a 90 minute ScreamFree motivational open to the general public. For more information on ScreamFree, please visit their website at www.screamfree.com.

GES will be holding it's "Back To School Fair" on September 4, 2010, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm in the school quad, with a general assembly for parents in the cafeteria. We will be announcing this event in the media as it approaches. Class rosters, required forms and school supply lists will be handed out on this date.

GES teachers spent three Wednesday afternoons engaged in SOLO training by Jerry McVicar. Jerry is the PSS Assistive Technology service provider. SOLO software brings assistive technology, strategies for ELLs and struggling students, and literacy skills to all classrooms. Thank you to the staff and teachers who participated in the training. Thank you to the Bank of Guam who have partnered with us for several years to raise money for cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. The Marianas March Against Cancer, held at the Hopwood Jr. High School Field on May 14, 2010 was a success regardless of whether or not GES garnered any prizes. Thank you Ms. Melisa Mendez, Mrs. Paulette Sablan, all the teachers who helped with the tent decoration, the teachers and aides who ran laps and took turns overseeing the event from 6pm to 6am the next morning. Our involvement in worthy causes like MMAC bring learning to life for our students. As they gain understanding about the human body, living a healthy lifestyle, preventing illness and contributing to the ongoing events that raise funds for research, they are truly demonstrating their ESLRs and Megaskills in life changing, meaningful ways.

FNS Holds Cheese Tasting for Students

5th and 3rd grade students were asked to taste samples of cheese for possible after school snacks.

Among the choices were mild cheddar, Gouda and Edam cheeses.

Did you know that what appears to be the remains of cheese has been found in Egyptian tombs over 4,000 years old!
The Pilgrims included cheese in their supplies onboard the Mayflower in 1620.
The world's largest consumers of cheese include Greece (63 pounds per person each year), France (54 pounds), Iceland (53 pounds), Germany (48 pounds), Italy (44 pounds), the Netherlands (40 pounds), the United States (31 pounds), Australia (27 pounds), and Canada (26 pounds).

Learning at Home: attending Parent Literacy Night workshops help parents gain skills to tackle those tricky homework assignments and understanding of the schools academic achievement goals. This was a workshop on standardized assessments. Parents received samples of the SAT10 and tips for preparing their child to take the test.

Changing Earth

Earth is changing everyday

And we can’t deny, it’s because of our ways

We see pollution in our everyday lives

People see it, children, husbands and wives

Trees are always being cut down

Turned into paper and shipped into town

Our beaches were not as clean as before

I’m afraid if we keep polluting, we’ll just do more

Our environment isn’t that healthy for us

Because of the cars, the trucks and the bus

But together we can make a new way

To make a new environment and a new day

Our beaches could be clean again

If we lend a hand and be a friend

We can plant trees in twos, threes and fives

And increase the amount of oxygen in our lives

So, let’s take care of our Earth and give it time

Though it’s not worth a penny, a nickel or dime

But you’ll feel good once you’ve seen

That everyone is going green

In spite of the negativity that surrounded the threat of austerity hours for the PSS and NMC, I believe we learned an important lesson about our government. When we argue about money and power we get nowhere. When we talk about children, we find that we're all in agreement. Our children are the most valuable natural resource we have and it is our obligation as a Commonwealth to protect and ensure that their needs are met. This was the second time PSS had to defend it's federal dollars against austerity measures. I hope that one day there will be laws put in place to automatically prioritize and protect education.

Thank you to the teachers, staff, parents and administrators who showed up to the public hearings on House Bill 17-45. Thank you to the Senate who just voted to let the people decide to lift the constitutional protection of legislators, judges,etc. Thank you to the Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee for validating the voices of the people and putting our students first. Sleeping Beauty wins 1st Place at the Parade of Books

The Saipan Rotary Club sponsored Parade of Books, an event that brings literature to life and showcases the talents of private and public school students in the CNMI. On Saturday, March 27, fourteen schools came together at the Marianas High School Gymnasium to share their favorite stories through skits, song and dance. GES students, under the direction of teachers Claire Dela Cruz, Lorraine Arriola and Lori terre, plus a host of other teacher volunteers and parents performed their rendition of the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty. Here are some photos from their performance. GES would like to thank Barny's Pizza for providing drinks and food for the students after the show. There sure were a lot of smiling yet hungry kids. Congratulations to the Mallards and all the schools who participated! Keep reading everyone!
